What 5 Lake House actually is

Despite the name, this is not on the shore of Windermere: 5 Lake House stands at Burton Road in Lower Bentham, in the Lune valley north-east of Lancaster, and the "lake" in question is the old Lancashire-Yorkshire boundary country rather than anything you can swim in. Guests who book expecting a waterside view are the ones who end up disappointed, so it is worth saying plainly. What you get instead is a four-star house with a proper kitchen, a fireplace, a garden and parking — self-catering comfort with hotel-level finishes, in a quiet village with the Forest of Bowland and the western Dales on three sides.

That makes it a good fit for a walking or cycling break, for a family who wants space and a washing machine, and for anyone driving between the Lakes, the Dales and the Lancashire coast who would rather not pay Lakes prices for a bed. Pets are allowed, which suits the area: this is footpath country, with lanes and bridleways heading straight out from the village.

What is within reach

Lower Bentham sits in the Wenning valley, with High and Low Bentham either side of the river and the Yorkshire Dales National Park boundary about four miles north. Ingleton and its waterfall trail — a mile or so of gorge, steps and bridges past Pecca Falls, Thornton Force and the Money Tree — is a short drive. Clapham, with the show cave at Ingleborough and the trail up to Ingleborough summit, is similarly close, and the 24 arches of Ribblehead Viaduct and the Settle–Carlisle line are half an hour away on a clear road.

Lancaster itself is twenty minutes south-west on the A683: the castle, the Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park, the Maritime Museum in the old custom house and a market that has been running since the twelfth century. Morecambe Bay is a little further — the Stone Jetty, the promenade and the tides that make the bay famous. Kirkby Lonsdale, with its medieval Devil's Bridge over the Lune and the Ruskin's View churchyard that Turner painted, is ten minutes in the other direction, and Kendal and the southern Lakes are about thirty-five.

Getting here and getting about

You need a car. This is the honest answer: there is a rail station at Bentham on the Leeds–Morecambe line with a handful of services a day, and buses along the valley are infrequent and stop early. Coming from the south, the M6 at junction 34 (Lancaster) is the usual approach, then the A683 up the Lune valley; from the east, the A65 through Kirkby Lonsdale. Parking at the house removes the usual village-street problem.

For a day out without driving far, the Settle–Carlisle line from Bentham or Wennington is the classic: Ribblehead, Dent, Garsdale and Appleby are all a station stop away, and the journey over Ais Gill is one of the best railway views in England. If you want the coast, Morecambe and Heysham are half an hour, and the ferry port at Heysham puts Ireland within a night's sailing.

When to come, and for how long

May and June are the best months here: the valley is green, Ingleborough and the Bowland fells are at their easiest, and the days are long enough for a full day out plus an evening in. September and early October are the quiet equivalent, with the heather going over and the crowds gone. Winter is for firesides, the Ingleton folk festivals and a bit of weather; the house is built for it.

Two nights covers Ingleton and Lancaster; three gives you the Lakes or the Dales as well. This is also a workable stopover on a longer drive north or south, in which case one night is enough — just check the arrival time and any minimum-stay rule on the rate before booking. Rates are set live by the property, so the cheapest night is often a midweek one outside the school holidays.
