Why this hotel, and who it suits
Piccadilly Place is a glass-and-stone development off Piccadilly Basin, and this DoubleTree by Hilton occupies a corner of it — close enough to the station to walk your luggage over, far enough from the busiest streets that the room is quiet. The 4.3 score across more than 3,200 reviews is the statistic that matters here: you are not booking a boutique experience, you are booking a large four-star city hotel that is very good at what large four-star city hotels do. Rooms are air-conditioned (not universal in Manchester), there is a 24-hour front desk, a gym, a lounge and a restaurant, and the standard DoubleTree warm cookie on arrival is either charming or absurd depending on your mood.
It suits three kinds of trip in particular: a concert or match with an early train home, a business stay where the station-to-desk walk matters more than anything else, and a family weekend where a lift, a bath and a sofa bed are worth more than a view. Ask about parking if you are driving, because the garage here is paid and pricey — most guests arriving by public transport find they simply do not need a car in Manchester.
Manchester from the door
The Northern Quarter — Thomas Street, Oldham Street, the coffee shops, record shops and the bar and food scene around Stevenson Square — is a ten-minute walk. Piccadilly Gardens, the Arndale and the Market Street shops are five. The Gay Village on Canal Street, with its canalside bars, is two minutes further east, and the Rochdale Canal runs right past the bottom of Piccadilly Place, which makes for a pleasant walk towards Deansgate or out towards Ancoats and the restored mills.
A little further: the Castlefield basin with its Roman fort and the Museum of Science and Industry, the John Rylands Library on Deansgate — a Victorian neo-Gothic reading room that stops people in their tracks — the Museum of Transport just north of Victoria, and the Royal Exchange theatre in its cotton hall. Old Trafford and the Etihad are both a short tram ride from Piccadilly Gardens, and the Co-op Live arena and the AO Arena bring most people to this part of town in the first place.
For a half-day out, the tram from Piccadilly reaches Altrincham and the Cheshire line in twenty minutes, and the train to the Peak District — Edale, Hope and Hathersage — takes under an hour from Piccadilly station, which surprises people who assume Manchester is all city. York, Leeds and Liverpool are all within an hour and a half by rail if you are doing a northern tour.
Getting here
Manchester Piccadilly station is two or three minutes' walk, which is the reason many people pick this hotel over cheaper ones half a mile away. Fast trains run to London Euston in about two hours ten, Leeds in under an hour, and Liverpool in about fifty minutes. The Metrolink tram network, the free bus route around the city centre and the taxi rank are all on the doorstep; the airport is fifteen minutes on the train and about twenty-five by road outside rush hour.
If you are driving, come off the M60 at junction 24 or 27 and follow the signs for the city centre and Piccadilly — but be realistic about the traffic between 7.30 and 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm, and budget for the car park. Once you are here, walking and trams cover everything, and the city centre is compact enough that most visits need nothing else.
When to come, and for how long
Manchester is a year-round city and the hotel's rates swing with events, not the weather. Match weekends at Old Trafford and the Etihad, the arena concert calendar, graduation weeks in July, the Christmas markets from mid-November and the two big party weekends of the year all push city-centre room rates up sharply — check the calendar before you fix a date. Late January, February and early March are the quietest and cheapest weeks, and the Rainy City's reputation for rain is well earned, so plan one indoor option per day.
Two nights covers the centre, one museum or gallery, and an evening out. For a concert, one night at this location is more sensible than a cheaper room on the ring road with a taxi at midnight. Midweek business rates are usually the best value in the city, and booking the room and the train separately almost always beats a package.
