The Newstead, and what it is for
Newstead is a substantial Victorian house on New Road, five minutes' walk from Windermere station and from the village's shops, pubs and restaurants. It carries a five-star rating and, unusually for the village, free parking on site plus a garden and a garage — three things that cost real money in Windermere. The facilities point at a self-catering-capable setup rather than a stripped-back bedroom: a kitchen, a dishwasher, a washing machine, a cot, towels and Wi-Fi are all listed alongside a garden and, for guests who want it, horse riding locally.
What a five-star rating means here is polish and service rather than a spa and a swimming pool — the Lakes hotels that offer those are the big country houses out at Bowness, Grasmere and Low Wood, and they price accordingly. Newstead's advantage is position: you can leave the car and do the whole break on foot, by boat and by bus. Ask before booking whether your room is a standard room or one of the apartment-style units, and check whether a garden or balcony is included in the rate you are shown, since the facilities list covers the whole property.
Windermere village and Bowness
Windermere village and Bowness-on-Windermere are a mile and a half apart, with the village at the top of the hill by the station and Bowness down at the shore. Newstead puts you in the village, which is the better end for trains, buses and an evening meal without a drive; the lake is a twenty-minute walk downhill and a rather longer one back, or a few minutes on the 599 open-top bus. Boats leave Bowness pier for the islands, for Ambleside and Waterhead, and for the full length of the lake to Lakeside, where the Lakeside and Haverthwaite steam railway takes over.
Orrest Head, the hill above the station, is the classic short climb — twenty minutes up, an enormous view down the length of Windermere, and the walk that made Wainwright a fellwalker. The Dales Way and the route up to School Knott and the tarns head out of the village in the other direction. At Bowness, Blackwell, the arts and crafts house with its terraced garden over the lake, is a half-hour walk and one of the best afternoons in the area; the Windermere Jetty Museum is closer to the water in the other direction.
Ambleside and Waterhead are ten minutes up the A591, Grasmere and Rydal another ten, with Rydal Mount, Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth connection. The drive over Kirkstone Pass to Ullswater is one of the great Lakes roads and not one to attempt in the dark or in ice. Coniston, Hawkshead and Hill Top, Beatrix Potter's farmhouse, are within half an hour.
Getting here, and getting around
Windermere station is on the branch from Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line, and trains from Manchester Airport run direct — which makes a genuinely car-free weekend possible. The 599 bus connects the village with Bowness, Ambleside and Grasmere, and the 505 covers Windermere, Bowness and Hawkshead. By road, the M6 at junction 36 and the A590/A591 is the standard approach; at peak times in summer, the last two miles into Bowness can take longer than the motorway before them.
Free parking at the hotel is the practical reason to pick this location over a Bowness address: leave the car once and the rest of the break needs no driving. Fuel up before you arrive and plan to walk or take the boat wherever possible.
When to go, and for how long
May, June and September are the sweet spots: long days, reasonable weather and room to move. July and August are the busiest and dearest, with the lake cruises full by mid-morning and Bowness at its most crowded. October brings the colours and half-term prices; November to March is quiet, cheap and often crisp, with the fells to yourself on a clear day.
Two nights is enough for the lake and Orrest Head; three or four lets you add Grasmere, Ullswater or Coniston without rushing. Midweek is noticeably better value than weekends all year, and the village is small enough that a single evening out covers most of the restaurants — book ahead on a Friday or Saturday.
