Hollicarrs Wildflower Lodge at a glance
Wildflower Lodge is one of the lodges at Hollicarrs Holiday Park, a wooded site off the York Road at Escrick, seven miles south of York. Two stars here means value and self-catering rather than a hotel with a bar and a breakfast service: you get a kitchen with an oven, microwave, dishwasher, toaster and fridge, a bathroom with a bath as well as a shower, a washing machine for the muddy days, and a patio or terrace depending on which lodge you are given. The park adds the things a family actually uses — a tennis court, a fishing lake, space to run about — and parking is free, which in York is worth a surprising amount.
It is worth being clear about the two-star rating. These are not serviced hotel rooms and the price reflects that: no daily cleaning in most lodges beyond the changeover, and any cot or laundry arrangements need confirming when you book. What you get in exchange is space, a kitchen and a base that costs considerably less than a central York hotel of the same standard, with a supermarket in Escrick and a bigger one at Fulford on the way into town.
York, and what surrounds the park
The city is the reason most people are here. A bus runs from Escrick into York along the A19, the drive is fifteen minutes to the Park & Ride at Fulford or Grimston Bar, and from there the Minster, the walls, the Shambles, Jorvik and Clifford's Tower are all within a twenty-minute walk of each other. Two miles of city wall can be walked on top of for most of the circuit, and the riverside path down the Ouse past the Museum Gardens to the Millennium Bridge makes a good afternoon. Book the Minster and Jorvik ahead in summer; both sell out on wet days.
Escrick itself is a small estate village with a church, a couple of pubs and the long lime avenue of Skipwith Common a few minutes east — a rare lowland heath of birch and heather that is one of the best free afternoons for children in the county. Skipwith Common National Nature Reserve has ponies, paths and plenty of room. Elvington is nearby if anyone fancies the Yorkshire Air Museum, and Selby with its great abbey is fifteen minutes south. Castle Howard is half an hour north on the A64, and the Wolds and the coast beyond Malton are an easy day out.
Getting there and getting about
By road, the A19 from York to Selby passes the park's entrance and the A64, A1(M) and M62 are all within a few miles, so this works well as one leg of a longer trip through Yorkshire. By rail, York station is the hub — East Coast Main Line to London in under two hours, plus the Scarborough, Harrogate and Leeds lines — and the station is a short taxi ride from the park; there is a bus stop on the York Road, but the walk to it with luggage is not pleasant at night.
Park & Ride is genuinely the best way into York: Grimston Bar and Fulford both stop running quite late, so check the last bus time, and if you are staying out in the evening, budget for a taxi back. Parking inside the city walls is £15–£25 a night at most hotels and much less in the long-stay car parks outside them.
When to come and how long to stay
Late April to June and September to early October are the best windows: dry-ish weather, long days, and no York race-day premium. July and August are the busiest and the dearest, and the August Ebor Festival at York Racecourse can lift city rates sharply for four nights — though a lodge seven miles out is insulated from that in a way a central hotel is not. November to February is quiet and cheap; the lodge is warm, and the city's Christmas market makes a good weekend in the cold.
Three nights is the right length for York plus one outing, and a week suits a family who want the coast, the moors and the city without moving. Check the rate's cleaning fee and minimum stay before paying, as lodges usually carry both — and confirm whether the hot tub is included in the particular lodge you are shown, since not every unit at Hollicarrs has one.
