What is on page 30 of the North Yorkshire stays list?

Page 30 of 113, showing twenty of 5,406 places to sleep in North Yorkshire at a time. The order is algorithmic rather than alphabetical, so this page is a mixed bag of towns — Whitby, Scarborough and the moors among the cards — and the next page will be different again.

Should you page through, or use the filters?

Use the filters. Hotel class, guest rating, price band and facilities — Wi-Fi, free parking, kitchen, breakfast, restaurant or bar, pets allowed, family rooms, hot tub or spa, wheelchair access — will cut 5,406 stays down to a list you can actually read, and sorting by recommended, rating or price is quicker than paging.

How to choose a base in North Yorkshire

The county is large and the drives are slow. York to Whitby is 45 miles and around an hour twenty on the A64 and A169; Skipton to Whitby is 90 miles across the county and well over two hours each way, which is why a single base for a week of York, the coast and the Dales does not work. Two bases beat one for anything longer than four nights.

For a first visit, York is the obvious first base — the Minster, the walls, the Shambles, Jorvik and Clifford's Tower are all walkable from each other, and Castle Howard, Ripon and the coast are day trips. Expect £110–£180 for a mid-range central double, more on race days. For the coast, Whitby has the abbey, the 199 steps and the harbour but the tightest parking; Scarborough has more rooms and more range; Filey and Robin Hood's Bay are quieter and sell out months ahead in summer. For the moors, Helmsley, Pickering, Thirsk and Kirkbymoorside put you among the abbeys and the steam railway. For the Dales, Skipton and Settle have stations on the A65, while Grassington, Hawes, Leyburn, Masham and Richmond are market-town and village stays where a pub with rooms is often the only option.

The value bases most visitors overlook are the flat market towns: Northallerton, Bedale, Easingwold, Thirsk, Selby and Tadcaster, 20 to 40 minutes from York, Ripon and the moors, often £40–£60 a night cheaper, with Thirsk and Northallerton both on the East Coast Main Line. If you are bringing a dog, check the property's own pet rules rather than trusting the facility tick, and if parking matters, check it is on site and free — central York hotels charge £15–£25 a night on top of the room.

Prices, seasons and events worth checking first

Budget pub rooms and small guest houses run £55–£85 for two, usually with breakfast; three- and four-star doubles sit around £95–£150 and £110–£180 inside York's walls; country houses and sea-view rooms at the top end run £180–£350. Village inns in Grassington, Hawes, Masham and Robin Hood's Bay cluster at £100–£140 and have very few rooms, which is why they disappear first.

The price surges here have little to do with school holidays. York Racecourse holds around fifteen fixtures between May and October; the Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate in the second week of July fills everything within fifteen miles; both Whitby Goth Weekends sell the town out; and the Harrogate Convention Centre diary can put a midweek trade exhibition above a summer Saturday. Late September and early October are the underrated weeks — Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx and Bolton Castle are near-empty and prices have already dropped, while midweek in January, March and November is where the real savings are.

Finally, read the address and not just the town name. Plenty of "York" hotels are five to ten miles out at Escrick, Copmanthorpe or on the A19 towards Selby, and a "Whitby" address can mean Sleights or Ruswarp. That is fine if you are driving and awkward if you planned to walk back from dinner — the map on each listing settles it in seconds.
